The Proudia was designed in 1999 by Mitsubishi as a full size luxury sedan with a transversely mounted engine and front wheel drive, which was unusual in the class, and it was shown with the longer Dignity limousine. The first generation was co-manufactured with Hyundai of South Korea, which marketed its own version as the Hyundai Equus from 1999 to 2009. Its name is a portmanteau derived from the English word proud and diamond.
