The third generation Pajero reached other markets in late 2000 as a 2001 model, and from 2000 and the introduction of generation 3, Mitsubishi's regular series production was more than enough for T2 entry in the Dakar, with no significant differences to the Dakar platforms until 2002. The Camel Trophy competition had run annually since 1980 until 2000. Over the 40 year run to 2021 more than 3.3 million Pajeros were sold.
