Local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in Brazil in 2006. The first generation Pajero Sport of 2006 was in its eleventh model year, a mid size SUV that was a smaller model to the larger Pajero, with a 3 liter V6 as the most commonly used engine and turbo diesels for Europe and Asia. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation. In Japan it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
