The Challenger nameplate that was retired from production in 2005 in one market was resurrected for the second generation of the Pajero Sport. The first generation was in its tenth model year in 2005 outside the United States, and the Pajero Sport remained in production with local assembly in China and Brazil. In Japan it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza. It was based on the Strada pickup of the same vintage and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.
