The Pajero Sport of 2002 was the seventh model year of the first generation, popular enough that local assembly for foreign markets was soon introduced. It was sold as the Montero Sport in North America and the Philippines, the Shogun Sport in Britain, the Pajero Sport in Europe and the Challenger in Japan, in five and seven seat versions. In Japan it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza. It was based on the Strada pickup of the same vintage and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.
