The design of the second generation was later partially influenced by the 2001 Pajero Evolution 2+2 concept car. The first generation Pajero Sport of 2001 was the sixth model year, with coil springs at the rear since late 2000, sold as the Montero Sport in the United States and the Challenger in Japan, and as the Pajero Sport in Europe. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation.
