The 2.4 liter petrol engine offered on base models in the United States from 1997 through 1999 ended after the 1999 model year, leaving the 3 liter V6 as the sole petrol choice in the United States. The Pajero Sport of 1999 was the fourth model year, sold as the Challenger in Japan and as the Nativa in parts of Latin America. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation.
