A performance oriented model, called the Turbo-R, was introduced in 2002 using a detuned version of the Lancer Evolution's 4G63T 2.0 liter turbo four. The Airtrek was in its second year in Japan, sold through Car Plaza, with the 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter engines, and it was waiting for the arrival of the Outlander name in North America the next year. The Airtrek name was coined from Air and Trek to express footloose, adventure filled motoring pleasure.
