The fifth generation Lancer arrived in 1988, sold locally in Japan only as a five door liftback and dropping the Fiore suffix, and sold until 1996 in Australia and New Zealand. In export markets the sedan retained the Lancer nameplate. The third generation Mirage had debuted in Japan in 1987, and the Lancer remained a front wheel drive compact derived from the Mirage and sold through the Galant Store dealerships. In Japan the Lancer was sold at Galant Store dealers and the Mirage at Car Plaza.
