Mitsubishi ended production of the Lancer in August 2017 worldwide, with the exception of Taiwan, and the CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America confirmed the end in January 2017, without a successor, as the focus moved to crossovers and SUVs. In January 2017 Mitsubishi agreed to continue the nameplate in Taiwan, with the Grand Lancer developed by China Motor Corporation, with Pininfarina Shanghai. It was built on the platform of the earlier Lancer as an extensive facelift.
