In February 2003, for the 2004 model year, a heavily restyled Lancer surfaced with front styling in line with the Mitsubishi corporate look and a restyled rear, to differentiate it further from the Lancer Evolution. Domestic Japanese production of the Mirage based generation ended in 2003, and in the Philippines the eighth generation Lancer Cedia was launched in 2003, sourced from the Thai plant until 2008. The Lancer Evolution grew out of the Lancer line for rally homologation.
