In North America the Lancer was introduced in 2001 for the 2002 model year as a direct replacement for the Mirage, after Mitsubishi discontinued the 1995 series Mirage for North America in 2001. In Europe the Evolution VII model that was sold bore the Carisma name, as the Lancer was not offered in some European countries. The Lancer Cedia remained in Japan, which still sold the older Lancers beside it. The Lancer was marketed under many names including Colt, Mirage and Soueast Lioncel in various countries.
