The Dion of 2001 was in its second year, a seven seat compact MPV, the second of the SUW, the Smart Utility Wagon proposed by Mitsubishi, after the Mirage Dingo. Full time four wheel drive had been added in July 2000. It was made to fill the gap of a five number plate minivan that had been left empty when the Chariot series became a three number plate car with the Chariot Grandis. The Dion was built at the Mizushima plant of Mitsubishi Motors in Kurashiki, Okayama.
