The R-Class was a mid-size luxury multi-purpose vehicle that Mercedes-Benz introduced in 2005 for the 2006 model year. It followed two concepts, the Vision GST shown with the coachbuilder Stola at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show and the Vision R of 2004, and the production car appeared at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. Coded W251, it shared its platform with the M-Class and GL-Class and came in a standard and a long wheelbase, only the long one being sold in North America. It was built at Vance, Alabama until 2015, then at Mishawaka, Indiana until 2017. In 2007 the range gained smaller V6 petrol and diesel engines.
