Japanese sales of the first generation Honda Stepwgn began on 8 May 1996. Most Japanese minivans of that time had the engine under the cabin, but the Stepwgn had a two box layout of the more usual kind and was based on the Civic to cut costs. The passenger side had a sliding door for easier access, and further cost savings came from offering only one engine and transmission, a two liter inline four with a 4 speed automatic, and from a design that used fewer steel panels and parts.
