For 1972 the Monterey underwent minor exterior revisions, replacing the full width horizontal grille with an egg crate style design, and in line with federal regulations front seatbelt warning buzzers were introduced. For the first time an automatic transmission was standard, along with power steering and power brakes. The 429 V8 options were replaced by a single 209 net horsepower four barrel. The Monterey was the lower of the two full size Mercury lines, beneath the Marquis.
