For 1961 the Monterey became the equivalent of the Ford Galaxie, sharing a bodyshell with Ford rather than Edsel. With the Montclair and Park Lane discontinued, the Monterey moved from the base trim Mercury sedan to its flagship, slotted above the newly introduced Meteor. It lost six inches of wheelbase and nearly two inches of width. The 292 cubic inch Y block V8 of 175 horsepower was standard, with the 352 and 390 FE V8 engines optional.
