1986 saw few changes to the Cougar, highlighted by the addition of the center rear brake light and a power operated moonroof, and for the last time the Cougar was available with vent windows. For 1986 the V8 was changed to sequential fuel injection, increasing output to 150 horsepower. The XR7 turbocharged 2.3 L four, offered since 1984, was dropped the following year in favor of the 4.9 L V8. The Cougar was a Fox platform luxury sports coupe, the counterpart of the Thunderbird, with a notchback roofline and GS, LS and XR7 trims.
