For 1981 Mercury added a standard trim Cougar replacing the Monarch as its mid size offering, sharing its two door and four door sedan body with the second generation Ford Granada, and for the first time a V8 engine was no longer standard equipment on this version. The year marked the debut of GS and LS trim lines for both the mid size and XR-7 Cougars. The standard Cougar used a 105.5 inch wheelbase. Both used GS and LS trims.
