2002 was the final year for the Cougar, and the last Mercury Cougar rolled off the assembly line on 9 August 2002. Ford announced another restructuring of its model line, with 2002 also marking the final year of the Mercury Villager, Lincoln Continental and Ford Escort. The 2002 model year offered the XR package in Black or XR Racing Red and a 35th Anniversary version, in addition to the C2. The Cougar was a front wheel drive three door sport compact on the Ford CDW27 world car platform, sold as the Ford Cougar in Europe and Australia.
