The fourth generation MX-5 carried on in 2021 with its 2019 update, which had upgraded the engine to 181 horsepower, in its seventh year of production at Mazda's Hiroshima plant. It was offered as the roadster and as the Retractable Fastback, and was often described as the successor to the small British and Italian roadsters of the 1950s and 1960s, with the Lotus Elan as its design benchmark. In Japan it was marketed as the Mazda Roadster, and in the United States as the MX-5 Miata.
