The MX-5 was introduced in February 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, at a time when small roadsters had almost disappeared from the market and the Alfa Romeo Spider was one of the few comparable cars. Mazda built it at its Hiroshima plant under the design credo of unity of horse and rider, with a curb weight under 1,100 kilograms and the Lotus Elan as a design benchmark. Wheels magazine named it Car of the Year for 1989.
