The Millenia was more dramatically facelifted for the 2001 model year, with most of the changes to the front and rear bumpers and grille, reinforcements to the body structure and larger brakes. The car was by then in its eighth year, still the Xedos 9 in Europe, still built in Japan, and it was at the end of its life as Mazda was preparing the Mazda6, which would replace it and the 626. It was engineered to higher perceived quality than mainstream Mazdas, with better interior plastics, smaller panel gaps and a thicker paint coat.
