For the 2000 model year Mazda added a limited run Millennium Edition trim, positioned above the Millenia S and using the same 2.3 liter engine, with 3,000 cars. The year coincided with the cultural hype around the start of the new millennium. The Millenia also received a minor facelift, and the name was a misspelling of the word millennia, a multiple of one thousand years, which Mazda used for its flagship sedan. Mazda claimed the attention to detail was meant to set standards for at least ten years.
