The Millenia appeared in 1993 in Japan, built by Mazda there. It was originally to be the launch model in 1994 for the Amati brand under the name Amati 500, but after the Japanese asset price bubble collapsed the brand was cancelled by October 1992 and by November 1993 it was decided to sell the car as a Mazda. Mazda of Europe sold it as the Xedos 9 from 1993 and in Japan and Australia it was the Eunos 800, with the Miller cycle version called the Eunos 800M.
