The Rolls-Royce Sweptail is a one-off coachbuilt luxury car made by Rolls-Royce Motor for a private client and unveiled in May 2017 at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy. Its design draws inspiration from classic Rolls-Royce models and from the client's interest in yachts. It is based on the Phantom Coupe and was hand-built over four years, inspired by the coachbuilding of the 1920s and 1930s, and it was commissioned in 2013 by a super-yacht and aircraft specialist. At its May 2017 debut it was the most expensive new automobile in the world, costing around 10 million pounds, until the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, sold for 18.7 million US dollars, overtook it in 2019. Giles Taylor, then director of design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, described the vehicle as the automotive equivalent of haute couture.
