Mercedes-Benz S-Class W220

Automobiles

The W220 is the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a range of flagship sedans marketed from 1998 to 2005. It replaced the W140 and offered long and short wheelbases, four-wheel drive and diesel as well as petrol V6, V8 and V12 engines. It was slightly smaller outside than the W140 but roomier inside, particularly in the long version. Steve Mattin led the design, approved in June 1995 and frozen in March 1996, and the prototypes were shown in June 1998. Regular production began in September 1998 and the C215 coupe followed in 1999. A total of 484,683 were built before production ended in July 2005, so the W220 spent most of its life under DaimlerChrysler.
