The W164 is the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, introduced in April 2005 as a 2006 model after a first showing in Detroit in January. Development ran for six years from 1999, and the design was styled by Steve Mattin. It was almost entirely new, with a more aerodynamic shape and a drag coefficient of 0.34, and it moved from a body-on-frame to a unibody platform shared with the GL-Class. It brought a seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic, an adjustable air suspension and permanent 4Matic all-wheel drive, and it dropped the manual gearbox. The ML 63 AMG, with a handbuilt 6.2 litre V8, was the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 SUV when it appeared, and a facelift in 2008 added BlueTec diesel engines and a hybrid ML 450 followed in 2009.
