The W163 is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, a mid-size body-on-frame SUV launched on 19 February 1997 in the United States as a 1998 model and built until 2004 or 2005. It was built at the new Mercedes plant in Vance, Alabama, and between 1999 and 2002 also by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, for Europe. It started with the ML 320 and its 3.2 litre V6, followed by the ML 430 with a new 4.3 litre V8 and the ML 55 AMG, and in Europe by the ML 270 CDI turbodiesel. It was the first luxury SUV with electronic stability control and won the 1998 North American Truck of the Year, yet it drew criticism for build quality, and DaimlerChrysler spent 600 million dollars on the Alabama plant before the next generation.
