The M-Class is the mid-size luxury SUV that Mercedes-Benz has built since 1997 and that was renamed GLE in 2015. The first generation, coded W163, was a body-on-frame SUV built in Vance, Alabama, and for a few years in Graz, Austria. The second, W164, moved to a unibody platform shared with the GL-Class, and the third, W166, followed in 2011. BMW objected to the M badge with a three-digit engine number, so the cars were sold as ML models under the M-Class name, such as the ML 320, a name that alluded to its 3.2 litre V6. It was the first luxury SUV with electronic stability control, and it began as a plan to share a platform with Mitsubishi that Mercedes dropped in 1992 in favour of its own design.
