The X164 is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, a full-size luxury crossover SUV built from 2006 to 2012. It debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, and around 600 million dollars was invested in the Mercedes plant in Alabama to build it. Unlike most three-row luxury SUVs of its time, it sits on a stretched and widened M-Class platform instead of a body-on-frame design. Every model has leather seats, climate control, 4MATIC all-wheel drive, air suspension and a seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic. A facelift in June 2009 redesigned the grille, bumpers and interior and gave all diesels urea injection under the BlueTEC name, and Grand Edition models followed in 2011. It was named MotorTrend SUV of the Year for 2007.
