The GL-Class is the full-size luxury crossover SUV that Mercedes-Benz has made since 2006, a three-row, seven-passenger car set above the M-Class. Its first generation, coded X164, was built from 2006 to 2012 and was the first full-size seven-seat SUV from a German maker, released around the time of the Audi Q7. The second generation, X166, went on sale in September 2012 and added start-stop and drive-by-wire steering. After a facelift in 2016 the name changed to GLS under a new naming scheme, in which the G stands for Geländewagen and the L links it to the S-Class, which it is the SUV counterpart of. Most were assembled at the Alabama plant, apart from a number of early 2007 cars made in Germany.
