Lanchester 38 HP

Automobiles

The Lanchester 38 HP was a luxury British touring car built by the Lanchester Motor Company from 1911 to 1914, the first vehicle designed entirely by George Lanchester, though it kept many of his brother Frederick's ideas. It replaced the 28 HP and was itself replaced by the Sporting Forty, which put the engine in front of the driver. Its distinctive feature was an engine mounted much further back than usual, partly beside the driver, with a short bonnet and a radiator behind the centre line of the front wheels. The 4,942 cc straight six horizontal overhead valve petrol engine developed 63 hp at 2,200 rpm and drove through a three speed epicyclic gearbox and a worm driven rear axle. In the First World War the Royal Naval Air Service used it as the Model 19B, and it formed the basis of the Lanchester armoured car.
