BMW Hydrogen 7

Automobiles

The BMW Hydrogen 7 was a limited production hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle that BMW built from 2005 to 2007, based on the petrol-powered 7 Series (E65) and more specifically the 760Li. It used the same 6-litre V12 as the 760i and 760Li, modified so that it could burn hydrogen as well as petrol, which made it a bivalent engine, and the driver could switch seamlessly between the two fuels at the touch of a button on the steering wheel. In hydrogen mode, high-pressure injectors made by Hoerbiger ValveTec inject hydrogen gas directly into the combustion chamber at pressures up to 300 bar, in a combination of spark-ignition and diesel combustion. Only 100 vehicles were built, handed to public figures such as politicians, media figures and businessmen as ambassadors for hydrogen fuel.
