Both 2.25-litre engines, petrol and diesel, were given five-bearing crankshafts in 1980 to make them more rigid, and the transmission, axles and wheel hubs were strengthened. This was the end result of a long series of updates meant to deal with the rear axle half-shafts that tended to break in heavy use. Also that year Rover car production ended at Solihull, leaving the plant exclusively for Land Rover, and the Range Rover gained a five-door body.
