The Discovery was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 and went on sale in Britain in October. Developed as Project Jay, it used the Range Rover's chassis, suspension and four-wheel-drive layout, and was sold at launch only as a three-door with a five-speed manual gearbox and a lockable centre differential. Sixty-four press demonstrators with registrations beginning with G and ending WAC became prized by enthusiasts. The interior by Conran Design Group, treated as a lifestyle accessory with light Sonar Blue trim, won a British Design Award in 1989.
