The five-door body arrived in 1990, a year after the three-door launch, and both carried five seats with the option of two jump seats in the boot for seven. To make room for the third row the spare wheel moved outside onto a side-hinged rear door, and the roof over the rear section was raised, which together with the safari side windows gave the Discovery its own profile. The V8 engine switched from twin SU carburettors to Lucas 14CUX fuel injection in 1990.
