Land Rover entered the Discovery 3, alongside the Range Rover Sport, in its 2006 G4 Challenge competition, with vehicles in standard mechanical form apart from extra Land Rover off-road equipment. The same year the second-generation Freelander debuted and was renamed the LR2 for North America and the Middle East, mirroring the LR3 name of the Discovery. Ford bought the Rover brand name from BMW in 2006.
