From spring 2007 the Defender became the L316, with changes made mainly to satisfy emissions and safety rules. The in-house Td5 was replaced by Ford's 2.4-litre DuraTorq diesel, built at Dagenham, with the same 122 horsepower but more torque, mated to a new six-speed gearbox. A full-width dashboard with instruments from the Discovery 3 replaced the old layout, and forward-facing rear seats replaced inward-facing ones, cutting the 110 4x4 from nine seats to seven. A new five-seat Utility body arrived on the 110.
