The vehicle formerly known as the Ninety, One Ten and One Two Seven became the Defender in 1990, because the Discovery had made Land Rover the name of a brand rather than of one model, and they were renamed Defender 90, 110 and 130. The 200Tdi turbodiesel, from the Discovery, arrived in the range, with direct injection, an alloy cylinder head and intercooling, and gave the Defender comfortable high-speed cruising and fast towing on hills. The 130 got its own purpose-built chassis instead of a spliced 110. By this point the 127 was sold only with its two most powerful engines.
