The One Ten, the first coil-sprung Land Rover and the start of what became the Defender, was launched in 1983. Superficially it looked like the Series III, with a full-length bonnet, a revised grille and wheel-arch extensions covering wider axles, but mechanically it was modernised: coil springs front and rear for a better ride, a permanent four-wheel-drive system with a lockable centre differential taken from the Range Rover, a new interior and a taller one-piece windscreen. It kept the Series III engines, the 2.25-litre petrol and diesel and the 3.5-litre V8.
