2006 was the last year of the L315 Defender, the Td5 diesel era, and the year the 300Tdi stopped being made. Land Rover announced the new 2.4-litre diesel, a six-speed gearbox, a new dash and forward-facing rear seats for the Defender, which arrived the following spring. Karmann in Brazil, which had built Defenders from kits since 1999, stopped at the end of 2006, and the New Zealand Army retired its last Land Rover V8s that year.
