1994 brought the 300Tdi, a development of the Tdi diesel that was virtually a new engine with the same capacity, giving 111 horsepower in both the Defender and the Discovery. The Defender XD, extra duty, was created for the British Army, with a much stronger chassis and 300Tdi power, and is known to the army as the Wolf. In North America, only the Defender 90 was offered for 1994 and 1995, with the 3.9-litre V8 and an R-380 manual gearbox, an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler.
