In 1989 Land Rover introduced the Discovery as a third model to be built alongside the Ninety and One Ten. The arrival of a model with the Land Rover name was the reason the original vehicles needed a name of their own the following year. A redesigned breather system was also brought in for the turbo diesel in 1989, following the new block and bearings of 1988, and largely solved the engine's problems, though like many early turbo diesels it remained prone to failure if its maintenance was neglected.
