The 1999 model year saw the introduction of the all new second generation Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. While the 4.0 liter Power Tech inline six and the 42RE four speed automatic transmission both carried over from the previous generation, the 5.2 liter Magnum V8 was replaced by an all new 4.7 liter Power Tech V8 mated to the new 45RFE four speed automatic transmission. The inline six engine was also updated for the 1999 model year.
