The new ZJ model, the Grand Cherokee, was introduced in 1993, but the XJ models were retained until 2001 because the Cherokee's continuing popularity made Chrysler executives rethink replacing it. The Country trim replaced the Laredo and Limited for 1993. The XJ was originally to be replaced by a larger model called the ZJ, which became the Grand Cherokee in 1993, and the Country trim took over from the Laredo and the Limited.
