The 2001 Honda Fit was the first model year, debuting in June 2001 in Japan. Honda planned to call it Fitta, selling it in Japan under that name in 2001, but since fitta is vulgar slang in Scandinavian languages, it chose Jazz for most markets and Fit for the Americas. Debut sales in Japan far exceeded Honda's original target of 8,000 a month, and the Fit had outsold the Toyota Corolla by December 2001.
