The 1991 Honda Beat was the first model year, produced from May 1991. It was the last car approved by Soichiro Honda before his death in 1991, and it was sold only in Japan, through the Honda Primo dealerships. Roughly two thirds of the around 33,600 made were built in the first year of production. The Beat was the first kei car with disc brakes at all four wheels, and its design came from Pininfarina.
