Honda launched the first generation Ballade in September 1980, nine months after Honda and British Leyland agreed to produce their own versions of the car and work together on future cars. The name came from ballade, the French for ballad, and since the four door Ballade sedan and the five door Quintet hatchback were both luxury versions of the Civic, the Ballade stood for a kind of music and the Quintet for a musical group. In Japan the Ballade's rivals were the Nissan Laurel Spirit and the Toyota Sprinter. Each model year has its own page.
