The Volkswagen Scirocco is a sport compact car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen in two generations from 1974 to 1992 and a third generation from 2008 until 2018, when production ended without a successor. It is a three-door hatchback with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and takes its name from a Mediterranean wind. Work began in the early 1970s on a replacement for the ageing Karmann Ghia coupe, using the Golf platform under new styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and it debuted at the 1973 Geneva Motor Show, six months before the Golf. The Scirocco GTi followed in summer 1976 with a 1.6 litre fuel-injected engine. The third generation was announced in 2006 to be built at the Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal.
